  • District 11 candidates talk housing, clean streets — & all want sidewalk parking

    June 12, 2024 5:18 PM

No matter which District 11 supervisor candidate wins, they will push for residents to be able to park on the sidewalks — as long as a wheelchair can pass by.

Five of the six candidates running to represent the district in November want to maintain sidewalk parking — no matter that it is illegal and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority has been ticketing the practice regularly. That hurdle was disregarded at the forum on Sunday afternoon, co-hosted by local YIMBY group Southside Forward and neighborhood group We Are OMI and moderated by Mission Local’s managing editor, Joe Eskenazi.

Only Chyanne Chen, one of the six candidates, was missing. She had an engagement that predated her declaration of candidacy, Eskenazi said.

More than 100 neighbors from District 11 packed the community forum at the Minnie & Lovie Ward Recreation Center at 650 Capitol Ave. to meet the candidates, who offered distinctly different approaches to winning over the crowd.

  • SF Examiner: Meet the frontrunners in the race to succeed Ahsha Safai

    April 30, 2024 2:49 PM

San Francisco’s District 11 supervisor race features one lifelong inhabitant of the area, an immigrant who arrived there as a teenager from China, and a new resident who put down roots in early February while campaigning to win a seat on The City’s Democratic Party committee.

Ernest “EJ” Jones, a former legislative aide who worked for incumbent Supervisor Ahsha Safai, and Chyanne Chen, a union representative who has fought for workers providing in-home supportive services, both said they are well-qualified because of their many years of community service and intimate knowledge of the district.

Meet the District 11 candidates: ‘What is your number one issue in this election?’

District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safaí is termed out — and running for mayor — and, so far, four candidates have thrown their hats in the ring to replace him as the representative of the Excelsior, Oceanview and Outer Mission.

In our first edition for District 11, we are asking: What is your number one issue in this election and what do you plan to do about it?

    Ernest “E.J.” Jones:

Public safety and its connection to economic vitality is the consistent issue neighbors are talking about throughout my District. Families and business owners alike want to see a decrease in business vandalism, car break-ins and robberies. Crimes like these harm our commercial corridors and leave residents feeling unsafe and unprotected.

I plan to create a District 11 safety plan that holistically approaches safety issues using the coordination of neighborhood activations, community-oriented policing, and investments in mental health and wellness programs. Within 100 days in office, I will publish the District 11 safety plan based on my conversations with community groups, residents and merchants.

  • Why Next Year’s Race Is Heating Up Fast

Ernest “EJ” Jones is about as “Native San Franciscan” as you can get—born at St. Luke’s Hospital and raised in the Lakeview/Ingleside neighborhoods, he went to St. Ignatius prep school and got his master’s in public administration at the University of San Francisco.

“I've lived in the district my entire life," Jones told The Standard. "I'm invested. I'm rooted here. I don't plan on leaving."

Endorsed by incumbent Safaí, Jones looks to continue a pragmatic “labor moderate” approach to government, with an emphasis on consensus.

  • EJ Jones on Running for District 11 Supervisor

    June 19, 2023 3:02 PM

Jones said he will serve as a branch between City Hall and constituents if elected.

Ernest “EJ” Jones made his debut onto the political scene as one of District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safaí’s legislative aides, and now he’s running to succeed his former boss.

The active neighborhood member and Ingleside resident filed paperwork for District 11 supervisor last month and is focusing his campaign on community involvement.

Though the election isn’t until November 2024 — and no other candidates have registered to date — Jones is looking forward to jumping in and having the opportunity to continue supporting his neighbors.

“As a person who grew up in this community, everything that I have is because of the support for my community,” Jones said. “I take that with me when I try to lead. I really try to lead from a place of understanding and try to lean into those values when I’m working.”
